Courses

The Language Education Program combines required education and field work courses with education and Spanish Language and culture electives. Typically, students will take five to six 3-credit courses, which include the Field Work Experience.

Required Education Courses (in English):

The Process of Learning and Teaching - 3 Credits
Students will study the role of research-based teaching strategies, self-reflection on learning, and feedback from other classmates and teachers to improve instruction for all students. They will explore current research and thinking on conditions necessary for effective practice in the classroom, including; multiple intelligences, cooperative learning, and bilingual education.

Field Work Experience and Research - 3 Credits
After a period of observation students will propose a project for their classroom that integrates some of the concepts analyzed in their coursework. These projects will be carried out in class under the supervision of an experienced teacher. The students may decide what grade level to work with since the Colegio teaches Pre-K through 12th grade. In addition, students will write a research paper deriving from concepts discussed in their course work, observation, data and conclusions drawn from the application of these concepts in their teacher training and individual projects

Elective Education Courses (in English):

Teaching English/Spanish as a Foreign Language - 3 credits
This course will focus on the wide range of methodology for the teaching of foreign languages. After an overview of how these methods evolved, the course will look at different resources available for the foreign language classroom. Finally the focus will be on how innovative methods have come to play a major role in effective teaching and learning, looking in particular at how differentiation and meeting the individual needs of the learner have become ultimate goals in EFL teaching, leading to the modification of instruction, assessment, and development of best-practice instructional strategies.

Innovation in Learning Centers and Classrooms - 3 credits
Students will study the role of different models of education and the implications they may have on school organizations and curriculum design. Students will explore the application of assessment and portfolios to the quality and excellence of schools and students.

Spanish Language and Culture Electives - 3 credits each
The University of Zaragoza offers several courses on aspects of Spanish culture such as history, geography, art, literature, and film.for foreign students that at each individual's level. Students will complement these classes with others taught specifically for them in English, including trips and visits. These classes will concentrate especially on the local or regional cultural icons such as Goya, Buñuel, Becquer, Mudejar Art, castles, etc.

Courses include:

  • Introduction to Spanish Literature
  • Spanish Contemporary Cinema
  • Modern and Contemporary History
  • Geography of Spain
  • Medieval History: Road to Santiago

    Students with the equivalent of at least 6 semesters of university-level Spanish may also take regular courses at the University of Zaragoza with Spanish students.

    Credits in Zaragoza

    All courses in the program are three credit hours. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, a transcript of credits earned in the Language Education Program will be forwarded by the Wells College Registrar to the student's home college. Grades and credits are assigned by the Director of the Program based on the grades submitted by the instructors on the Program. Students should speak in advance to their major advisor at their home institution about courses that will count toward their major requirements.

    Academic Calendar

    The Language Education Program is conducted during Spring Semester only. Students will start with a 2- to 3-week orientation in January designed to prepare them for their academic, social and personal experience in Spain. The students, accompanied by Wells College professors, will travel for two weeks visiting Barcelona, Zaragoza, Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Granada, Torremolinos, and Córdoba before returning to Zaragoza for a two to three day on-site program orientation.
