Study Abroad Zaragoza

Teacher Education in Spain

Study Abroad Zaragoza The mission of the Wells College Language Education Program in Spain is to provide students with an interest in teaching an opportunity to improve their Spanish, take education courses, and have an internship experience in Spain.

The Language Education Study Abroad Program takes advantage of the beautiful city of Zaragoza and the resources it has to offer. Students take education courses and semi-intensive Spanish offered at the University of Zaragoza. These are combined with a field experience at the Colegio de Lanuza, a bilingual pre-K through 12 private school. For students with more advanced language skills, integrated courses with Spanish university students may also be available.

Host Institutions

The University of Zaragoza, located in the heart of the city of Zaragoza, offers a vibrant academic atmosphere where program participants will mix every day with students from Spain and throughout Europe. Established over 450 years ago, the University of Zaragoza is one of the largest Spanish universities, with more than 40,000 students spread amongst several campuses in the region of Aragon. Language Education Program participants will be enrolled at the University and will be eligible to join all the clubs and societies that are so much a part of Spanish university social life.

The Colegio Juan de Lanuza was established in 1978 and focuses on bilingual teaching as well as recognizing the need for individualized and continuous assessment, as well as observation and experimentation as a basic element of learning. Established by a group of parents and teachers, this private school has many similarities to a charter school in the US, and parents of all students play an important role in managing the school. Located in a modern building in the outskirts of Zaragoza, the Colegio offers an excellent opportunity for student teaching in Spanish or English across a full array of curriculum.

Language Requirements

Because education courses are offered in English and student teaching can be done in English, the program requires only one year of college-level Spanish for admission. Students with more advanced language skills may be able to conduct some student teaching in Spanish and those with the highest level of proficiency have the option of taking integrated courses with Spanish students at the University of Zaragoza.
